Can You Bring Pillows on a Plane? (Short Answer)
Yes, you can bring pillows on a plane. Most airlines allow passengers to carry personal pillows without any issues. Pack a pillow in your carry-on or bring it aboard as an additional item. Travel-sized pillows are ideal due to their compact size. Always check with your airline for any specific rules.
1. Types of Pillows You Can Bring on a Plane
Travel Pillows
Travel pillows are designed for use on planes, trains, and automobiles. They are usually U-shaped to support the neck and prevent discomfort during naps. Airlines widely accept these pillows, which can easily fit into carry-on luggage.
Regular Bed Pillows
If you prefer the comfort of your bed pillow, you can bring it along. While regular pillows are bulkier, they are generally allowed on board. However, be mindful of the space it might take up in your carry-on or personal items.
Inflatable Pillows
Inflatable pillows offer the convenience of compact storage. You can deflate them when not used, making them ideal for space-saving. Airlines accept these without issue, and they can easily fit into your carry-on bag.
Specialty Pillows
Specialty pillows, like those designed for lumbar support or body pillows, can also be brought on planes. However, due to their size, they might need to be packed in checked luggage or attached to your carry-on.
2. Airline Policies on Bringing Pillows
Airline policies can vary, but most allow passengers to bring pillows on board. Here’s a general overview of what to expect from major airlines:
American Airlines
American Airlines allows passengers to bring a pillow as part of their carry-on or personal items. If the pillow is small, it can be carried separately without counting towards your carry-on limit.
Delta Airlines
Delta Airlines has a similar policy, permitting pillows as part of your carry-on allowance. Travel pillows can be carried separately, while more giant pillows should be packed in your carry-on or checked luggage.
United Airlines
United Airlines allows passengers to bring pillows on board. Small travel pillows do not count against your carry-on limit, while more giant pillows should be packed appropriately.
Southwest Airlines
Southwest Airlines is lenient with travel pillows, allowing passengers to bring them on board without counting towards the carry-on limit. More giant pillows should be packed in your carry-on or checked baggage.
Budget Airlines
Budget airlines like Spirit and Frontier may have stricter policies. Generally, they allow small travel pillows, but more giant pillows should be packed in checked luggage to avoid extra fees.
3. Packing Tips for Pillows
Optimize Your Carry-On Space
Consider packing an inflatable pillow that can be deflated and stored compactly to maximize space. If you prefer a regular pillow, compress it by placing it in a vacuum-sealed bag.
Attach to Your Luggage
If your pillow is too large to fit inside your carry-on, consider attaching it to the outside of your luggage using straps or a travel pillow clip. This keeps it accessible without taking up valuable space.
Use a Pillowcase with a Zipper
A pillowcase with a zipper can double as storage for smaller items like earplugs, an eye mask, or even a lightweight blanket. This keeps your essentials organized and easily accessible during the flight.
Keep It Clean
Airports and planes can harbor germs, so keep your pillow clean using a removable pillowcase that you can wash after your trip. Place the pillow in a plastic bag when not in use for extra protection.
Consider the Destination
If you’re traveling internationally, check the customs regulations of your destination country. Some countries have strict rules about bringing used bedding items to prevent the spread of pests.
4. Benefits of Bringing a Pillow on Your Flight
Enhanced Comfort
Having your own pillow can significantly enhance your comfort during the flight. It provides neck support, helps you sleep better, and reduces the chances of arriving at your destination with a stiff neck.
Hygiene
Airline-provided pillows may only sometimes be clean. Bringing your own pillow ensures a clean and hygienic option, especially during long-haul flights.
Emotional Comfort
Traveling can be stressful, and having a familiar item like your pillow can provide comfort and reduce travel anxiety.
Versatility
A pillow can serve multiple purposes during your trip. It can be used as a cushion for sitting on hard surfaces, a lumbar support during long waits at the airport, or even a makeshift pillow at your hotel if needed.
Conclusion:
Bringing a pillow on a plane is not only permissible but also highly beneficial for travel comfort. Whether you opt for a travel pillow, an inflatable option, or your trusty bed pillow, being prepared with this essential item can make your journey more pleasant. Always check the specific policies of the airline you’re flying with and pack your pillow to maximize space and convenience.
