Furry pillows are a cozy and stylish addition to any home, but they can also be a bit tricky to clean. If you’re wondering how to wash furry pillows without damaging their fluffiness, you’re in the right place! Unlike regular pillows, furry pillows require special care to stay soft and beautiful. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the step-by-step process to ensure your furry pillows remain as stunning as the day you bought them.

How to Clean Furry Pillows? (Short Answer)

To wash furry pillows, start by checking the care label for specific instructions. Shake out the pillow to remove loose dirt and dust. If hand washing, soak the pillow in cold water with mild detergent, then gently scrub and rinse thoroughly. For machine washing, use a mesh laundry bag and gently cycle with cold water. Air dry flat, occasionally fluffing, or use low heat if machine drying is allowed.

Why Proper Care is Essential

Furry pillows, whether made from faux fur or real fur, are delicate. Improper washing can lead to matted fur, loss of softness, and even damage to the pillow’s structure. Regular cleaning is essential not only for appearance but also for hygiene, as pillows can harbor dust, allergens, and bacteria.

What You’ll Need

Before diving into the washing process, gather the following supplies:

1. Mild detergent or specialized fur cleaner
2. Cold water
3. A soft-bristle brush or pet brush
4. Towels
5. A large basin or bathtub (if hand-washing)
6. A washing machine (optional for machine-washable pillows)
7. A mesh laundry bag (optional for machine washing)

Step-by-Step Washing Process

Step 1: Check the Care Label

Always start by reading the care label on your furry pillow. The manufacturer’s instructions will provide crucial information on whether the pillow is machine washable, hand washable, or dry clean only. If the pillow is labeled “dry clean only,” it’s best to take it to a professional cleaner to avoid any risk of damage.

Step 2: Shake Out the Pillow

Before washing, take the pillow outside and give it a good shake to remove loose dirt and dust. You can also use a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment to gently remove surface debris.

Step 3: Pre-Treat Stains

If there are any visible stains on the pillow, pre-treat them with a mild detergent. Apply a small amount of detergent directly to the stain and gently rub it in with your fingers or a soft-bristle brush. Let it sit for about 10 minutes before proceeding to the washing step.

Step 4: Choose Your Washing Method

Hand Washing

• Fill a Basin or Bathtub:

Fill a large basin or bathtub with cold water. Add a small amount of mild detergent or specialized fur cleaner and mix until it’s well-dissolved.

• Submerge the Pillow:

Place the pillow in the water and gently agitate it with your hands to ensure the detergent penetrates the fibers.

• Gently Scrub:

Use a soft-bristle brush to gently scrub the pillow, focusing on any heavily soiled areas. Avoid vigorous scrubbing, as this can damage the fur.

• Rinse Thoroughly:

Drain the soapy water and refill the basin or tub with clean, cold water. Rinse the pillow thoroughly, making sure all detergent is removed. You may need to repeat this step several times.

Machine Washing

1. Use a Mesh Laundry Bag:

If the care label indicates that the pillow is machine washable, place it in a mesh laundry bag to protect it during the wash cycle.

2. Select the Right Settings:

Set your washing machine to a gentle cycle with cold water and use a small amount of mild detergent.

3. Wash and Rinse:

Start the washing machine and let it complete the cycle. Once done, run an extra rinse cycle to ensure all detergent is removed.

Step 5: Drying the Pillow

Drying furry pillows properly is crucial to maintaining their fluffiness and preventing matting.

Air Drying

• Remove Excess Water:

Gently press the pillow between two towels to remove excess water. Do not wring or twist the pillow, as this can damage the fur.

• Fluff the Fur:

Use a soft-bristle brush or pet brush to fluff the fur while the pillow is still damp gently.

• Lay Flat to Dry:

Lay the pillow flat on a clean, dry towel in a well-ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight, as this can fade the fur.

• Turn and Fluff:

Periodically turn the pillow and fluff the fur to ensure even drying.

Machine Drying (if applicable)

1. Low Heat Setting:

If the care label allows machine drying, use a low heat setting.

2. Tumble Dry with Tennis Balls:

Place the pillow in the dryer with a couple of clean tennis balls. The tennis balls will help fluff the pillow as it dries.

3. Check Regularly:

Check the pillow frequently to prevent overheating and ensure it’s drying evenly.

Step 6: Final Fluff and Maintenance

Once the pillow is completely dry, please give it a final fluff with your hands or a soft-bristle brush. Regular maintenance, such as shaking out the pillow and spot-cleaning minor stains, can help prolong the time between full washings.

Conclusion:

Washing furry pillows may seem daunting, but with the right approach, it’s quite manageable. By following the outline steps, you can keep your furry pillows looking and feeling their best for years to come. Remember, the key is gentle care and attention to detail.
