Owning a pool is one of life’s great luxuries, especially during the hot summer months. But with this luxury comes the responsibility of maintaining and protecting your pool, particularly during the off-season. One essential tool for pool maintenance is the pool pillow, also known as an air pillow. However, pool owners often face the question, “What size pool pillow should I use?” This blog post aims to answer that question comprehensively, offering practical advice and insights to help you choose the perfect pool pillow size for your swimming pool.
What Size Pool Pillow Should I Use? (Short Answer)
The size of the pool pillow you need depends on the size of your pool. An air pillow of 4×4 feet should be sufficient for a smaller pool. Medium-sized pools benefit from a 4×8-foot pillow. Larger pools, like those 24 feet and up, often require a 4×15-foot pillow. Always ensure it is centered to distribute pressure evenly.
Understanding Pool Pillows
What is a Pool Pillow?
A pool pillow is an inflatable device placed under the cover of an above-ground pool during the winter months. Its primary function is to absorb the pressure from ice expansion, which can otherwise damage the pool’s walls and liner. By acting as a barrier, the pool pillow helps maintain the shape and integrity of the pool.
Why Are Pool Pillows Important?
Pool pillows are crucial because ice formation can exert tremendous pressure on the pool structure. The expanding ice can push against the pool walls without a pool pillow, leading to potential cracks or tears. Additionally, pool pillows help keep the water off the cover, making maintenance easier.
Types of Pool Pillows
Pool pillows come in various shapes and sizes, typically square or rectangular. They are made from durable vinyl material to withstand cold and harsh weather conditions. Some pool pillows are treated with UV protection to extend their lifespan.
Factors to Consider When Choosing a Pool Pillow Size
Pool Size and Shape
The size and shape of your pool are the most significant factors when selecting a pool pillow. Larger pools require more giant pillows or multiple smaller ones to distribute the pressure evenly. Rectangular pools might need more than one pillow to cover the entire area adequately.
Climate and Weather Conditions
If you live in an area with harsh winters, you might need more extensive or multiple pillows to handle the increased ice expansion. Consider the typical weather conditions in your region to ensure your pool pillow can withstand the pressure.
Pool Cover Type
The type of pool cover you use also impacts the size of the pool pillow you need. Thicker, more robust covers may require more giant pillows to stay elevated and effective throughout winter.
Standard Pool Pillow Sizes
Common Pool Pillow Dimensions
Pool pillows typically come in standard sizes, the most common being 4×4 feet, 4×8 feet, and 4×15 feet. However, some manufacturers offer custom sizes to fit specific pool dimensions.
Ideal Sizes for Different Pool Types
- Small Pools (12-18 feet round):
A 4×4 feet pool pillow is usually sufficient for small round pools.
- Medium Pools (18-24 feet round):
A 4×8 feet pool pillow works well for medium-sized round pools.
- Large Pools (24-30+ feet round) or Rectangular Pools:
Larger or rectangular pools may require multiple pillows or a single large 4×15 feet pillow.
Customized Solutions
While standard sizes cover most needs, some pool owners opt for customized pillows. Custom solutions can benefit uniquely shaped or oversized pools, ensuring the pillow fits perfectly and provides optimal protection.
How to Properly Install a Pool Pillow
Preparing the Pool Pillow
Before installation, inflate the pool pillow to about 60-80% capacity. Over-inflating can reduce its effectiveness and lifespan. Ensure the pillow is clean and free of any punctures or damage.
Placing the Pool Pillow
Position the pool pillow in the center of the pool. For larger pools, you may need to use multiple pillows. Secure the pillow with ropes or grommets to prevent it from shifting during winter.
Securing the Pool Cover
Once the pillow is in place, carefully spread the pool cover over the pillow and pool. Ensure the cover is taut and securely fastened to prevent it from sagging or moving.
Maintenance Tips for Pool Pillows
Regular Inspection
Throughout the winter, periodically check the pool pillow for signs of wear and tear. Address any issues promptly to ensure the pillow remains effective.
Cleaning and Storage
At the end of the winter season, clean the pool pillow thoroughly before deflating it. Store it in a cool, dry place to prevent mold and mildew growth.
Replacing Worn-Out Pillows
Pool pillows have a limited lifespan. To ensure your pool remains protected, replace them every few seasons or when you notice significant wear and tear.
Benefits of Using the Right Pool Pillow Size
Protection Against Ice Damage
Using the correct pool pillow size ensures that the pressure from ice expansion is evenly distributed, protecting the pool walls and liner from potential damage.
Easier Pool Maintenance
A properly fitted pool pillow elevates the cover, preventing water and debris accumulation. This makes spring cleanup more manageable and less time-consuming.
Extended Pool Lifespan
The right pool pillow size can help extend the overall lifespan of your pool by preventing damage and reducing wear and tear, saving you money in the long run.
Common Misconceptions About Pool Pillows
Bigger is Always Better
While more giant pool pillows can be beneficial, they are only sometimes necessary. To be effective, the size of the pool pillow should be proportional to the size of your pool.
One Size Fits All
Pools come in various shapes and sizes, so a more than one-size-fits-all approach is needed. When choosing a pillow, consider your pool’s specific dimensions and requirements.
Pool Pillows Are Optional
Some pool owners believe pool pillows are optional. However, the benefits of using a pool pillow far outweigh the minimal investment, making it an essential part of winter pool maintenance.
Conclusion:
Choosing the right pool pillow size is crucial for protecting your pool during winter. Considering pool size, climate, and cover type, you can select the perfect pool pillow that meets your needs. Proper installation and maintenance further ensure your pool remains in top condition, providing you with years of enjoyment.
