Why wrapping your pillow matters
Pillow wrapping is more than just a decorative touch. It’s a protective barrier, shielding pillows from stains, spills, and allergens. And it’s a way to extend the lifespan of your pillows, preventing wear and tear. So, why not try it and see the difference it can make for your pillows?
Benefits of pillow wrapping
- Preserve the cleanliness and freshness of your pillows.
- Adds a decorative element to your bedding or seating arrangement
- Simplifies maintenance by making it easier to clean and care for your pillows
Gather Your Materials
Before you begin, make sure you have the following items on hand:
- Your long pillow
- Fabric of your choice (enough to cover the pillow with some excess)
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Pins
- Sewing machine or needle and thread
Measure Your Pillow
Before sewing your extended pillow cover, Ensuring accurate measurements of both the length and width of your pillow is crucial. Add an extra 2 inches to each measurement to account for seam allowances. These dimensions will ensure a perfect fit for cutting your fabric.
Cut Your Fabric
To create a pillow cover, you must cut two rectangular pieces of fabric based on your measurements. For instance, if your pillow is 20 inches long and 6 inches wide, you will want to cut two pieces that are 22 inches long and 8 inches wide—one for the front and one for the back of the pillow cover.
Pin and Sew
- Place your fabric pieces together, with the right sides facing each other.
- Pin the long sides and one short side of the fabric together, leaving one short side open.
- Using your sewing machine or needle and thread, sew along the pinned edges with a 1-inch seam allowance.
- Trim any excess fabric from the corners to reduce bulk.
Turn and Stuff
- Turn your pillow cover on the right side out through the open end.
- Insert your long pillow into the cover, ensuring it’s fully extended and fills it out evenly.
- Fold the raw edges of the open end inward by about 1 inch and pin them together.
Close the Opening
- Hand-sew the opening closed using a needle and thread, making sure your stitches are even and tight.
- You can also use fabric glue or iron-on adhesive to close the opening for a fast and simple finish.
Fluff and Enjoy
Once your pillow cover is complete, give your newly wrapped long pillow a good fluff to distribute the filling evenly. Now, sit back and enjoy your refreshed and protected pillow!
