Patio pillows can make your outdoor space cozy and inviting, but they often have a mind of their own when the wind picks up. Nothing ruins a relaxing day in your garden faster than chasing after runaway cushions. Whether you have a small balcony or a sprawling backyard, keeping your patio pillows in place is essential for maintaining that perfect outdoor sanctuary. This blog post will share some easy ways to keep your patio pillows from blowing away. It will provide practical tips, clever hacks, and easy-to-implement solutions for garden enthusiasts and homeowners.
How to Keep Patio Pillows From Blowing Away? (Short Answer)
A straightforward way to keep patio pillows from blowing away is to attach Velcro strips to your cushions and furniture. You can also use tie-downs or straps to secure them in place. Another option is to place heavier objects, such as rocks or decorative weights, on top of the pillows. Store your pillows indoors when not in use to prevent them from being blown away. Lastly, consider investing in heavier pillows or those designed for outdoor use, which are less likely to be moved by the wind.
Why Windy Days are the Worst for Patio Pillows
The wind is an unpredictable force of nature. One moment, everything is calm, and the next, your patio pillows are airborne. Understanding why the wind affects your outdoor space can help you better prepare.
First, the open layout of many patios and gardens makes them susceptible to gusts. Unlike indoor spaces, there’s little to stop the wind from sweeping through. Second, patio pillows are often lightweight, making them easy targets for even a gentle breeze. Lastly, the placement of your patio furniture can create wind tunnels, amplifying the effect. The good news is that you can keep your patio pillows firmly in place with a few adjustments.
Choose Heavy and Dense Materials
One of the simplest ways to keep your patio pillows from blowing away is to choose cushions made of heavier, denser materials. These fabrics are less likely to be lifted by the wind.
Why Heavy Fabrics Work
Because of their weight, heavy fabrics, such as canvas or outdoor-grade upholstery, tend to stay put. They are also more durable and can withstand the elements better than lighter materials.
Examples of Suitable Fabrics
Consider options like Sunbrella, a popular choice for outdoor cushions. It’s not only heavy but also resistant to water and UV rays. Other good options include olefin and acrylic.
Where to Find Quality Cushions
Many home improvement stores and online retailers offer a wide range of heavy-duty outdoor pillows. Look for those labeled explicitly for outdoor use to ensure they have the necessary durability.
Use Velcro Strips
Velcro strips are a versatile and effective way to secure your patio pillows. They offer a balance of convenience and stability, making them an excellent choice for windy areas.
How to Install Velcro Strips
Start by attaching one side of the Velcro to the underside of your pillow and the other side to your patio furniture. Ensure that both surfaces are clean and dry before applying the adhesive.
Benefits of Velcro
Velcro strips are easy to apply and remove, making washing or replacing your cushions simple. They also provide a firm hold without damaging your furniture.
Tips for Best Results
For maximum effectiveness, use industrial-strength Velcro. Check the weight capacity to ensure it can handle your pillows. Also, place the strips at multiple points to distribute the weight evenly.
Incorporate Ties and Fasteners
Ties and fasteners are traditional yet reliable methods for securing patio pillows. They blend seamlessly with most outdoor decor while offering robust wind resistance.
Types of Ties and Fasteners
You can find cushions with built-in ties or sew ties onto your existing pillows. Other options include bungee cords or zip ties for a more secure hold.
How to Attach Ties
If your cushions don’t come with ties, sewing them on is straightforward. Make the ties from durable, weather-resistant fabric and attach them securely to the corners of your pillows.
Advantages of Using Ties
Ties provide a customizable fit and can be adjusted to suit different furniture types. They are also easy to undo, making it simple to bring your pillows inside during extreme weather.
Utilize Cushion Weights
Cushion weights are a lesser-known but highly effective solution for keeping patio pillows in place. These small, weighted objects can be added to your cushions to increase their stability.
What Are Cushion Weights?
Cushion weights are typically made of silicone or other heavy materials and can be inserted into the seams of your pillows. Some are designed to be sewn in, while others can be clipped on.
How to Use Cushion Weights
Choose cushion weights that match the size and weight of your pillows. Insert them into the pillow seams or attach them to the corners. Ensure they are evenly distributed to maintain balance.
Where to Buy Cushion Weights
Cushion weights can be found at specialty home decor stores or online. Look for those specifically designed for outdoor use to ensure they are weather-resistant.
Store Cushions When Not in Use
Sometimes, the best way to protect your patio pillows is to store them when unused. While this may seem inconvenient, it can significantly extend the life of your cushions.
Advantages of Storing Cushions
Storing your cushions protects them from wind, rain, and sun damage. It also keeps them clean and ready for use whenever you need them.
Storage Options
Consider storage solutions like outdoor storage boxes or benches with built-in storage compartments. These options keep your cushions safe and readily accessible.
Tips for Easy Storage
To make storage easier, choose lightweight yet durable storage containers. Label them clearly and place them in a convenient location near your patio.
Use Non-Slip Mats
Non-slip mats are an effective way to prevent cushions from sliding off your furniture. They work well in conjunction with other methods for added security.
How Non-Slip Mats Work
Non-slip mats create friction between the cushion and the furniture, reducing the likelihood of slipping. They are often made of rubber or silicone and can be cut to size.
How to Install Non-Slip Mats
Place the mat between the cushion and the furniture, ensuring it covers the entire seating area. For best results, use mats that are slightly larger than the cushion.
Where to Find Non-Slip Mats
Non-slip mats are available at most home improvement stores and online. Look for those designed for outdoor use to ensure they can withstand the elements.
Add Decorative Weights
If you want to keep your patio pillows secure while adding a touch of style, consider using decorative weights. These can be both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Types of Decorative Weights
Options include weighted tassels, fringes, or small decorative stones. These can be sewn onto the corners or edges of your cushions.
How to Attach Decorative Weights
Use a strong thread and needle to attach the weights securely. Ensure they are evenly distributed to maintain the balance of your cushions.
Benefits of Decorative Weights
Decorative weights add a unique touch to your outdoor decor while keeping your cushions in place. They are also easy to remove or replace as needed.
Anchor Cushions with Furniture
Sometimes, the simplest solution is to use your furniture to anchor your cushions. This method works particularly well with larger, heavier pieces.
How to Use Furniture as Anchors
Tuck your cushions into the sides or back of your furniture. You can also place heavier items like trays or books on the cushions to keep them in place.
Advantages of This Method
Using furniture as anchors is quick and easy, requiring no additional tools or materials. It also allows for easy adjustment and removal.
Tips for Best Results
Ensure that your furniture is stable and not easily moved by the wind. This method works best with larger, heavier pieces that can provide a secure anchor.
Create a Wind Barrier
Another effective strategy is to create a wind barrier around your patio. This can help reduce the impact of solid gusts on your cushions.
Types of Wind Barriers
Options include installing windbreaks, using tall plants, or adding outdoor screens. These barriers can block or redirect the wind, reducing its effect on your cushions.
How to Install Wind Barriers
Position your wind barriers strategically around your patio, focusing on areas where the wind is most vital. Ensure they are securely anchored to withstand strong gusts.
Benefits of Wind Barriers
Wind barriers not only protect your cushions but also create a more comfortable and sheltered outdoor space and can add an element of privacy to your patio.
