Storing holiday pillows can be a bit of a challenge, especially if you want to keep them in good condition for years to come. Holiday pillows can add a touch of festivity to your home, but once the season is over, figuring out where and how to store them can be tricky. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the best practices for storing holiday pillows, ensuring they stay fresh and vibrant until the next holiday season.
How to Store Holiday Pillows? (Short Answer)
Storing holiday pillows properly is simple. First, clean the pillows to remove dirt or stains. Then, put them in plastic bins, vacuum bags, or fabric bags to keep them safe. Place them in a cool, dry spot away from sunlight. Check on them occasionally to ensure they stay fresh.
1. Clean Before You Store
The first step to storing holiday pillows is to ensure they are clean. Dust, dirt, and oils from your skin can accumulate on pillow covers and inserts, leading to potential damage over time.
How to Clean Pillow Covers
1. Read the Label:
Always check the care label on your pillow covers before cleaning. Some materials may be machine washable, while others might require hand washing or dry cleaning.
2. Machine Wash:
For machine washable pillow covers, use a gentle cycle with cold water and a mild detergent. Avoid using bleach or fabric softeners, as they can weaken the fabric.
3. Hand Wash:
If the covers need to be hand-washed, use lukewarm water and a mild detergent. Gently scrub any stains with a soft brush.
4. Drying:
Allow the covers to air dry completely before storing. Avoid using a dryer, as heat can shrink or damage certain fabrics.
How to Clean Pillow Inserts
- Spot Clean:
If your pillow inserts have minor stains, you can spot-clean them with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Dab the stain gently and avoid soaking the insert.
- Drying:
Make sure pillow inserts are fully dry before storing. Any moisture can lead to mould or mildew, which can ruin the pillow.
2. Choose the Right Storage Containers
Choosing the right storage containers is crucial to keeping your holiday pillows in good condition. Here are some options to consider:
Plastic Storage Bins
Plastic bins are a popular choice for storing holiday pillows. They are sturdy, stackable, and can protect your pillows from dust, moisture, and pests.
- Clear Bins:
Opt for clear bins so you can easily see what’s inside without having to open them.
- Size:
Choose bins that are large enough to accommodate your pillows without squishing them.
Vacuum Storage Bags
Vacuum storage bags are great for saving space. They work by removing air, which compresses the pillows and makes them easier to store.
1. Protection:
These bags protect pillows from dust, moisture, and insects.
2. Space-Saving:
They are ideal if you have limited storage space.
Fabric Storage Bags
Fabric storage bags are a breathable option that can help keep your pillows fresh.
- Breathability:
Fabric bags allow air to circulate, which can prevent musty odours.
- Protection:
They offer protection from dust and light exposure.
3. Properly Pack Your Pillows
Once you’ve chosen your storage containers, it’s time to pack your pillows properly.
1. Use Tissue Paper
Place a sheet of acid-free tissue paper between each pillow to prevent colour transfer and friction.
2. Don’t Overstuff
Avoid overstuffing your storage containers. Overstuffing can cause the pillows to lose their shape and become misshapen.
3. Label Your Containers
Label each container with its contents. This will make it easier to find specific pillows when you need them.
4. Store in a Cool, Dry Place
Where you store your holiday pillows is just as important as how you store them. Choose a location that is cool, dry, and away from direct sunlight.
- Avoid Damp Areas
Avoid storing pillows in damp areas like basements or attics, as moisture can lead to mould and mildew.
- Temperature Control
If possible, store pillows in an area with consistent temperature. Extreme temperature changes can cause fabrics to weaken and degrade.
5. Regularly Check Your Stored Pillows
Even when stored properly, it’s a good idea to check on your holiday pillows periodically.
- Inspect for Damage
Check for signs of damage, such as mould, mildew, or pests. Early detection can help prevent further damage.
- Air Out
Take the pillows out of storage occasionally to air them out. This can help prevent musty odours and keep the pillows fresh.
Conclusion:
Storing holiday pillows doesn’t have to be a daunting task. By following these simple steps, you can ensure your pillows remain in excellent condition for many holiday seasons to come. Clean them thoroughly, choose the right storage containers, pack them carefully, store them in a suitable location, and check on them regularly. With these tips, your holiday pillows will look just as festive and vibrant next year as they did this year.
