How to Wash Pillows with Baking Soda? (Short Answer)
To wash pillows with baking soda, sprinkle a generous amount over the pillow and let it sit for a few hours to absorb odors and moisture. Next, vacuum the pillow thoroughly to remove the baking soda. Mix baking soda with water to form a paste for deeper cleaning, apply it to stains, and scrub gently. Finally, air-dry the pillow entirely before using it again.
Why Clean Pillows Matter
Cleaning pillows is often overlooked, but it matters more than you think. Dirty pillows can harbor allergens and irritants that affect your health and sleep quality. Dust mites, for example, thrive in unwashed pillows, leading to allergies and respiratory problems. Sweat, oils, and drool can seep into pillows, creating an unhealthy sleeping environment. Regularly cleaning your pillows promotes better sleep and a healthier home.
Benefits of Using Baking Soda
Baking soda is a versatile and natural cleaning agent with many benefits. It’s non-toxic and gentle, making it safe for you and your pillows. Baking soda effectively neutralizes odors, absorbs moisture, and removes stains, ensuring your pillows are thoroughly cleaned without harsh chemicals. Using baking soda is also cost-effective compared to commercial cleaning products, making it an excellent choice for budget-conscious homeowners.
Preparing to Wash Your Pillows
Before you start the cleaning process, you need to make preparations. Check the care label on your pillows to ensure they are machine washable. Most pillows, including those filled with synthetic materials and down, can be machine washed, but it’s always best to confirm. Gather your supplies, including baking soda, mild detergent, and clean tennis or dryer balls.
Removing Pillowcases and Protectors
Begin by removing the pillowcases and any protective covers. Washing these separately ensures they are clean and free from dust and allergens. Pillowcases can usually be washed with your regular laundry using a mild detergent. For pillow protectors, follow the care instructions on the label.
Spot Cleaning Stains
Inspect your pillows for any visible stains before placing them in the washing machine. Mix a small amount of baking soda with water to create a paste, and apply it directly to the stains. Gently rub the paste into the fabric using a soft cloth or sponge. Allow the paste to sit for at least 30 minutes to break down the stains before washing.
Washing Pillows in the Machine
Place two pillows in the washing machine to balance the load. Add a half cup of baking soda along with your regular mild detergent. Baking soda helps neutralize odors and enhance the detergent’s cleaning power. Use a gentle cycle with warm water, as hot water can damage some pillow materials. Run an extra rinse cycle to ensure all detergent and baking soda are thoroughly rinsed out for best results.
Drying Your Pillows Properly
Proper drying is crucial to prevent mold and mildew growth. Place the washed pillows with clean tennis balls or dryer balls in the dryer. The balls help to fluff the pillows and keep the filling evenly distributed. To ensure your eco-friendly pillows remain durable and long-lasting, dry them on a low heat setting. Periodically check to make sure they are drying evenly. It may take a few cycles to completely dry the pillows, but ensure they are scorched before using them again.
Fluffing and Shaping Pillows
Once the pillows are dry, please spend a few minutes fluffing and reshaping them. This helps to restore their original shape and ensure the filling is evenly distributed. Grab the ends of the pillow and give it a good shake. You can also punch the pillow gently to break up any clumps and achieve a fluffy, comfortable feel.
Maintaining Pillow Freshness
To keep your pillows fresh between washes, sprinkle a small amount of baking soda on them once a month. Allow the baking soda to sit for about 15 minutes before vacuuming it off. This simple step helps absorb odors and keep your pillows clean and fresh.
When to Replace Your Pillows
Even with regular cleaning, pillows have a limited lifespan. Over time, they lose their support and can become less comfortable. Consider replacing your pillows every 1-2 years. Signs that it’s time for a new pillow include lumps, flatness, and persistent odors despite cleaning.
Tips for Different Types of Pillows
Different pillow types may require specific care. For memory foam pillows, avoid machine washing, as it can damage the foam. Instead, spot-clean stains with a baking soda paste and refresh the pillow by sprinkling baking soda and vacuuming it. For feather pillows, use a gentle cycle and low heat for drying to maintain their softness and durability.
Eco-Friendly Pillow Care
Using baking soda is not only practical but also environmentally friendly. Unlike chemical cleaners, baking soda is non-toxic and biodegradable. You contribute to a healthier home and a cleaner planet by choosing natural cleaning methods. Consider using eco-friendly laundry detergent and avoiding fabric softeners, which can contain harmful chemicals.
Conclusion:
Washing pillows with baking soda is a simple and effective method. It helps remove stains, neutralize odors, and keep your pillows fresh. Always check care labels and follow proper drying techniques to avoid damage. Regular cleaning extends the life of your pillows and ensures a healthier sleeping environment. Give it a try to enjoy cleaner, more comfortable pillows.
